What the BIP 39 word list is
BIP 39 (often written BIP39), by Marek Palatinus, Pavol Rusnak, Aaron Voisine and Sean Bowe, defines the seed phrase: 12 to 24 words that back up a whole wallet. Each word comes from a fixed list of exactly 2048 words. The list itself is public and the same for everyone. What keeps a wallet safe is which words were picked, and in what order, from random entropy.
BIP 39 asks three things of a good list:
- Smart selection: typing the first four letters should be enough to identify a word.
- No similar words: pairs like "build" and "built" or "woman" and "women" are left out, because they are easy to confuse.
- Sorted order: so software can look words up quickly.

How words map to numbers and bits
The list has 2048 words because 2048 = 2^11, so each word stands for exactly 11 bits. A wallet makes a seed phrase like this:
- Generate 128 to 256 bits of random entropy (a multiple of 32).
- Take the SHA-256 hash of it and append its first ENT/32 bits as a checksum, where ENT is the entropy length.
- Split the result into 11-bit groups. Each group is a number from 0 to 2047, used as a position in the list.

The well-known test phrase "abandon abandon ... abandon about" (11 times abandon) comes from 128 bits of zeros. "abandon" is position 0, binary 00000000000. The last word, "about", is position 3, binary 00000000011: seven more zero bits of entropy followed by the 4-bit checksum 0011.
Why the last word is a checksum
Because the checksum is computed from the entropy, not every combination of words is valid. In a 12-word phrase only about 1 in 16 random choices of last word passes; in a 24-word phrase about 1 in 256. Wallets check this when you restore, and BIP 39 says software must warn if the checksum fails. That catches many typos and swapped words, but the checksum is short and can't say which word is wrong. Word numbers: 1 to 2048 or 0 to 2047?
There are two numbering conventions, and it matters for metal backups:
- Word number, 1 to 2048: how printed lists, the line numbers of the official text file and many backup plates count. "abandon" is word 1.
- Index, 0 to 2047: the value the 11 bits actually encode in BIP 39. "abandon" is index 0.
The same word is always one apart in the two systems. Before stamping or punching numbers, check which convention your backup method uses, and note it alongside the backup. If a plate records binary, check whether it encodes the index (11 bits) or the word number (which needs 12 bits, because 2048 is 100000000000). The first four letters identify each word
The tool above checks the four-letter rule in your browser for the list you are viewing. In the English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Czech lists, no two words share their first four letters (in Spanish and French this holds even with accents removed). That's why recovery screens can autocomplete after four letters, and why some backups record only the first four letters of each word. In the Japanese list the first four characters are unique too. Korean words are two to four syllables long, and each Chinese "word" is a single character.
Ten languages, but use English

BIP 39 itself notes that "the vast majority of BIP39 wallets supports only the English wordlist" and strongly discourages generating phrases in other languages. There's a second reason to be careful: the seed is computed from the words themselves (normalized to Unicode NFKD), not from the entropy. Translating a phrase word by word into another list gives a completely different wallet.
From seed phrase to addresses
A seed phrase alone doesn't say which addresses a wallet uses. The seed feeds BIP 32 key derivation, and a derivation path such as m/84'/0'/0'/0/0 picks the account and address. How many words are in the BIP 39 word list?
Exactly 2048. Since 2048 = 2^11, each word encodes 11 bits, which is how a 12-word phrase holds 128 bits of entropy plus a 4-bit checksum. Every official language list has 2048 words. The English list runs from "abandon" (word 1) to "zoo" (word 2048).
Is the BIP 39 word list numbered from 0 or 1?
Both conventions exist. BIP 39 encodes each word as an index from 0 to 2047, so "abandon" is 0. Printed lists, the official file's line numbers and many metal backup plates count from 1 to 2048, so "abandon" is 1. The difference is always one. Can any 12 words from the list be a valid seed phrase?
No. Part of the last word is a checksum computed from the others: 4 bits for 12 words, 8 bits for 24. Only about 1 in 16 random 12-word combinations is valid, so wallets reject most mistyped or made-up phrases. Don't pick words yourself: human choices are far less random than a wallet's generator.
Do I need to write down every letter of each word?
In the English list the first four letters identify every word uniquely, so "aban" can only be "abandon", and some backups store just four letters. Writing full words is still clearer for anyone recovering the wallet later. The same four-letter rule holds for the Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Czech lists.
Which BIP 39 language should I use?
English. BIP 39 notes that most wallets only support the English list and discourages the others. The seed is derived from the words themselves, so a phrase in another language can't be translated into English words later: it would make a different wallet. Non-English lists exist mainly for wallets that already used them.
Is it safe to look up my seed words on this page?
